The Society came into being through the efforts of Ian White who was encouraged to promote the idea by a friend and colleague.
A letter from Ian was published in the parish magazine asking for interested parties to attend a meeting in the local hall on 22 Feb 2012.
The number of people who turned up was about a dozen or so. Not high in quantity but certainly high in quality.
The interest has grown from that first meeting and hopefully the Society looks set to become an active asset to the the villages of Stanstead Abbotts and Saint Margarets.
The resources among these original members was surprising. Everything from degrees in history to local authors, and highly knowledgeable people who are virtually local historians in their own right. A decision was taken to form a Society and a very rough outline of the aims drawn up.
A second meeting was arranged for 14 March 2012 and this time it was almost standing room only. The Society officially came into being on 1 April 2012.
