Lighting see map on page 17.

Except for the outlying houses, all our village now has either gas or electric lighting.

Street lighting has improved greatly in recent years and at present “Daylight” type electric lamps on 25ft concrete standards light High Street and Roydon Road as far as Thele Estates, single bulb electric lights serve Cappell Lane, and gas lamps are in South Street, Glenmire Terrace, Hunsdon Road and the Cats Hill.

Lavatories – see opposite page.  Here we lag behind the provision of lighting with far too many houses not yet supplied with WC’s flushed from cisterns.  Improvements depend of course on the laying of new sewers a costly business.

WATER SUPPLY - SEE OPPOSITE PAGE.

Here again we are rather behind the times, far too many houses still having pumps or worse still, one pump shared by a group of houses.  When the water main was laid in 1938 many property owners did not have water laid on probably because of the cost.  Easneye Estate houses however were all connected to the mains at that time.  The school, too, was connected in 1938, thus saving the Caretaker about an hour’s pumping daily.   With water available at a tap direct from the main, risk of infection from the open rooftop tank which previously supplied drinking water has gone.

NOTE.  A study of these maps, of shows that our village is one that has grown up along the roads and consequently unplanned and straggly.  The new housing estate, when completed will be a great contrast.

SUMMARY

No of houses   283

No with water laid on  208

No with own pumps  47

No sharing pumps  28

No of houses with bathrooms 85
